Can newbie catch this big fish with 12 lbs line and a small fish hook?

Absolute no chance! The Law of  Physics said so. A 12 lbs line can never hold such a big load fish.

To catch big fish, you must be well prepared and be ready to catch big fish with at least 35 lbs line,  solid fishing rod, a big hook and right bait.

DOW 13,910.42 Down 44.00(0.32%)

Major U.S. stock benchmarks fell on Wednesday, after dour U.S. growth data reinforced a decision by the Federal Reserve to maintain its commitment to massive economic stimulus.

In a decision widely expected by analysts, the Fed emphasized that it would stick to its bond buying program. That outcome was cast into doubt just weeks ago, after minutes from the central bank's last policy meeting showed some Fed members were growing concerned about ultra-low borrowing costs.

The decision converged with data that showed the U.S. economy shrank by an annualized 0.1 percent in the final three months of 2012, and reinforced expectations that the Fed would likely err on the side of more stimulus.

Despite a run of strong corporate earnings, the GDP data fanned concerns about the economy's ability to absorb higher tax rates — some of which took effect when the payroll tax holiday expired at the beginning of the year — and efforts to cut government spending.

"The real risk out there, and the Fed was very vague in how they characterized it…I think we're going to see major government spending cuts that are going to come through sequestration," Diane Swonk, chief economist and senior managing director, Mesirow Financial, told CNBC's "Street Signs"

"That is something the Fed has to deal with. That not only means weaker growth, which justifies lower rates, but it also means more Fed action."

After floating for most of the session between modest gains and losses in directionless trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed about 44 points, trading around 13,910.42, drifting further away from the psychologically-important 14,000 barrier being watched by analysts.

The S&P 500 Index slipped by nearly six points to 1,501.96, while the the Nasdaq dipped 11 points to trade above 3,142.31.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered to be the market's best gauge of fear in the market, rose above just shy of 14.

Average Down and Risk Control (Don't bet the house)

Are you a value investor? Take the Apple test

  1. Don't bet the house: No matter how confident you are in your value assessment, don't go overboard and invest a disproportionate amount of your portfolio in Apple. This is not just about you being right on the value but also about the market coming around to your point of view, and that is not in your control or mine; betting more than 10% of your portfolio on this stock strikes me as foolhardy.
Read? Investing Made Simple by Uncle8888 (20)

  1. Don't double down (Dollar averaging): I have never been a fan of dollar averaging, which not only muddies the water about when/how much you invested in a stock but results in increasing your bets as the market goes against you. Take a stand against the market but do not make this an ego trip, where admitting that you are wrong becomes impossible to do. Thus, while I feel more confident now that the stock is under valued than I was a week ago when I bought the stock for $500, I don't plan to buy more shares.

14,000 possible or not???

Stocks closed higher on Tuesday as the Dow marched toward the 14,000 level and investors looked ahead to Wednesday's Federal Reserve policy announcement.

A gain in the energy sector following strong earnings from refiner Valero and big gains in the pharma sector after Pfizer's solid earnings report supported stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 72.49 points, or 0.52 percent, to close at 13,954.42, lifted by big gains in Pfizer and Verizon. Hewlett-Packard lagged. The Dow has not closed above 14,000 since October 17, 2007.

The S&P 500 gained 7.66 points, or 0.51 percent, to finish at 1,507.84, while the Nasdaq shed 0.64 points, or 0.02 percent, to close at 3,153.66 as disappointing earnings weighed on tech stocks.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded near 13.

Biosensors Receives CE Mark Approval for BioFreedom™

Singapore, 28 January 2013 – Biosensors International Group, Ltd. ("Biosensors" or the "Company", Bloomberg: BIG SP; Reuters: BIOS.SI; SGX: B20), a developer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative medical devices, today announced CE Mark approval for its polymer-free drug-coated stent (DCS), BioFreedom™.

BioFreedom represents the latest development in Biosensors’ stent technology, featuring a micro-structured abluminal surface which permits the controlled release of Biolimus A9™ (BA9™) without the use of a polymer. BA9 is a highly lipophilic anti-restenotic drug developed by Biosensors specifically for use with stents.

CE Mark approval for BioFreedom was supported by strong data from the BioFreedom First in Man study. In this study BioFreedom was compared to Boston Scientific’s Taxus™ Liberté™ drug-eluting stent (DES). At 12 months, BioFreedom demonstrated equivalent efficacy, measured by in-stent late lumen loss, compared with Taxus Liberté, with a trend towards superiority. Median in-stent late lumen loss in patients receiving BioFreedom was reduced to 0.17 mm as compared with a median in-stent late lumen loss of 0.35 mm in the Taxus Liberté group. Three year clinical results, presented at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scientific symposium in October 2012, showed similar rates of MACE (Major Adverse Cardiac Events) between BioFreedom and Taxus Liberté, with no evidence of stent thrombosis in either group.

To further evaluate BioFreedom in a larger patient population, Biosensors recently announced initiation of enrolment in LEADERS FREE, the world’s first prospective, randomised double-blind trial between a DCS and bare-metal stent (BMS), exclusively involving patients at high risk of bleeding. The study has been designed to confirm that BioFreedom is as safe as a BMS in this patient group, and can deliver the anti-restenotic benefit of a DES, with only a one-month course of dual anti-platelet therapy administered to all patients.

This trial will provide additional data to support the launch of BioFreedom in select markets during 2013. The full commercial launch is currently anticipated during 2014.

From Show me the money, by Teh Hooi Ling

From one of the blog posts in BigFatPurse

"The Straits Times index has done exceptionally well over the recent months, returning close to 10% since mid November. Like the hot girl that walked up to the bar alone, it has created a stir and is starting to attract its fair share of interest. Many of my friends have made tentative forays into the market again after a layoff. A user left a comment on the blog sharing about the trend following strategy that he has been trading with, and how he has finally understood it after such a long time. He claims that the understanding is finally bringing him positive returns. I am skeptical and wonder if his stellar performance recently is due to his new found understanding or due to the favorable market conditions. I also wonder what will happen when the market decides to stop trending and range, and whether he would be able to obtain any returns from his trading activities if he were to utilize this strategy alone."

Luck and Skill???

The Success Equation: Untangling Skill and Luck in Business, Sports, and Investing by Michael J. Mauboussin

“Much of what we experience in life results from a combination of skill and luck.”

The trick, of course, is figuring out just how many of our successes (and failures) can be attributed to each—and how we can learn to tell the difference ahead of time.

In most domains of life, skill and luck seem hopelessly entangled. Different levels of skill and varying degrees of good and bad luck are the realities that shape our lives—yet few of us are adept at accurately distinguishing between the two. Imagine what we could accomplish if we were able to tease out these two threads, examine them, and use the resulting knowledge to make better decisions.

Keppel FELS delivers first of 20 rigs slated for 2013

Rig builder is on track to deliver Vision Drilling’s first KFELS B Class jackup rig “Dynamic Vision” two months ahead of time, garnering an early delivery bonus of about US$ 1 million

Keppel FELS Limited (Keppel FELS) is delivering its first rig of 2013 to Vision Drilling Pte Ltd (Vision Drilling), a wholly owned subsidiary of Cyprus based Dynamic Offshore Drilling Limited (Dynamic Offshore Drilling). The KFELS B Class jackup rig, Dynamic Vision, will be Vision Drilling's first such rig and will be delivered almost two months ahead of schedule with a perfect safety record.

It is the first of the 20 offshore rigs that Keppel FELS is expected to deliver in 2013, a record number for any yard worldwide.

Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, speaking as the Guest of Honour at the naming ceremony today, said, "The offshore and marine industry is a key part of Singapore's economy and we are proud that Keppel, a home-grown company, has established itself as a global leader in the design, construction and repair of mobile offshore rigs. The successful delivery of Dynamic Vision is testament to Keppel's proven capabilities and the strong industry partnerships it has built up."

Mr Wong Kok Seng, Managing Director (Offshore), Keppel Offshore & Marine and Managing Director, Keppel FELS added, "We are pleased to be able to deliver our first rig of 2013 two months ahead of schedule. It augurs well for the rest of the 19 rigs that we expect to deliver this year. For the month of January alone, we are delivering three rigs. Our ability to deliver these rigs on time or ahead of time and safely is due to two factors; the continuous process and productivity improvements we have implemented in the yard; and the fact that the majority of the rigs being built are to our proprietary designs.

"In addition, we also have a very good partnership with Vision Drilling, having worked with their management team previously. Over the years, Keppel FELS has seen growing interest from Indian offshore and marine companies. Since 2003, they have ordered a total of ten jackup rigs, all of which are of the KFELS B Class design. We look forward to enhancing our relationship with them and continuing to service India's oil and gas market."

Deepwater Drilling & Services Pvt. Ltd, an India-based company in the Dynamic Offshore Drilling Group, has a five year charter with Fortune 500 Indian National Oil Company Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Ltd for work in the Western part of Offshore India.

Mr Naresh Kumar, Chairman of Dynamic Offshore Drilling said, "India's growing energy demand is driving the country to actively increase its offshore oil and gas production. The proven KFELS B Class jackup design, coupled with our established experience in offshore drilling, places Vision Drilling in a good position to meet this demand.

"In growing our fleet of high specification jackup rigs, we look to continue to, work with reliable shipyards and Keppel FELS has again lived up to its reputation as the world leader in rig building with this early delivery."

Built and optimised to meet the unique environmental requirements of India, Dynamic Vision is capable of operating in water depths of 350 feet and drilling down to 30,000 feet. Keppel's advanced and fully-automated high capacity rack and pinion elevating system and self-positioning fixation system have been incorporated into the design.

Not-So-Secret Rules of Investing Success

Not-So-Secret Rules of Investing Success

I should really be charging a small fortune for this advice, but what I’m going to share isn't actually a secret. I'm continually bombarded with pitches from folks who want me to subscribe to their newsletter that is guaranteed to deliver big investing profits. My question is always, “If this is so good why are you sharing it with me for this absurdly low price?” Note I’m not knocking all investment newsletters or services, just those that make clearly outlandish claims of success.
Take at look at hedge fund performance. A piece on CNBC the other day that said that the average hedge fund was underperforming the S&P 500 index by a wide margin in 2012. While some of these funds do have solid long-term track records, others do not and they aren't shy about charging hefty fees.

In my opinion there are few, if any, investing secrets.

Here are a few keys to being a successful investor based upon my experience as a financial adviser:

Persistence. Successful investing is a continual, lifelong process. Many of the “Nifty Fifty” stocks of the late 1960s did not turn out to be the “one-decision” stocks they were touted to be. Investors need to stay on top of their holdings, the world around them, and their own unique situation. Adjustments in one’s overall portfolio and in individual holdings are warranted from time to time.

Understand your risk tolerance. It sounds great to say I don’t care what happens to the markets in the short-term as long as you can ultimately practice this. Case in point were the many investors who tragically sold out of their equity holdings near the bottom of the last market downturn only to see the market head into a tremendous rally since March of 2009. These folks booked significant losses and in many cases never got back into the market to recover them.

Invest in line with your goals. Your investment portfolio should be driven by your financial goals and your timeframe to achieve those goals which should come together in the form of a financial plan.

Monitoring your individual holdings and your overall portfolio is vital. Even index funds change, just witness Vanguard’s recent change of index providers. Certainly actively managed mutual funds need to be monitored as do investments in individual stocks and bonds. I don’t encourage market timing or even frequent trading, but there are no “set it and forget” investments. On top of that, it is critical to make sure that your overall portfolio is in line with your investing and asset allocation plan.

Commitment is vital in terms of making investing a priority. Sometimes it’s difficult to fit monitoring investments into busy lifestyles. Like anything else, if your financial success is important to you, it is vital to commit the time required.

The S&P 500 rose 1.1 percent in the past week to 1502, its first close above 1500 since Dec. 10, 2007.

The Dow was up 1.8 percent at 13,895, the highest level since Oct. 31, 2007, and just 1.9 percent away from its all-time high.

The Nasdaq was up 0.5 percent at 3149, held back by big losses in Apple, which fell sharply on disappointing earnings news.
Some analysts believe that big round numbers, like 1500 and 14,000 on the Dow are zones that could cause a mild pullback in stocks, or a pause in the not too distant future.

Stocks closed higher Friday, with the S&P 500 ending above 1,500 and logging its longest winning streak since November 2004, boosted by a batch of upbeat corporate earnings reports. All three major averages turned in their fourth-consecutive weekly gain.

"Slowly but steadily, things have moved up and we've seen some signs money being diverted into stocks instead of bond funds," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services. "But having said that, none of the rally has turned into an outright stampede—We haven't seen huge volume or a sense of short squeeze."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 70.65 points, or 0.51 percent, to close at 13,895.98, led by Procter & Gamble and JPMorgan. The blue-chip index is up more than 6 percent for the month so far, on track for its best January performance since 1989.

The S&P 500 climbed 8.14 points, or 0.54 percent, to finish at 3,149.71, closing above 1,500 for the first time since December 2007. The Nasdaq rose 19.33 points, or 0.62 percent, to end at 3,149.71.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, ended above 12.

For the week, the Dow jumped 1.80 percent, the S&P 500 rallied 1.14 percent, and the Nasdaq advanced 0.48 percent.
